تتضمن الرواية ثلاثة أجزاء يبدأ الجزء الأول بخمسة فصول يليه الجزء الثاني بخمسة فصول أخرى ثم أخيرا الجزء الثالث ويتضمن ثلاثة عشر فصلا وذلك على النحو التالي اطبيبة الاسكندرية لجزء الأول حيث تبدأ الأحداث بقدوم فينة إلى ميناء الإسكندرية بقيادة القرصان بومبيدوس محملة بعديد من البضائع الثمينة والمسروقات والعبيد المقيدين بالأغلال ويتم غخلاء السفينة من العبيد لبيعهم لمن يرغب ومن بين العبيد فتاة شقراء ذات شفة مشقوقة تشبه شفة الأرنب وتسمى تاليا قادمة من مدينة قليقلة ويقوم الطبيب اليوناني ليبتينوس ذو الطباع الرومانية الخشنة ويشتريها بثمن بخس ويصطحبها خادمه المصرى تيل بتاح لتساعده في أعمال منزله وعيادته.
