Overview
تبدأ أحداث الرواية في عام 1939، مع نهايات الحرب الأهلية في إسبانيا، وظهور بوادر الحرب العالمية الثانية وتحول أوروبا إلى جحيم، حيث جهز الشاعر التشيلي بابلو نيرودا، سفينة وضع على متنها جماعة من المناضلين من إسبانيا فروا من بطش ديكتاتورها الجنرال فرانكو. وانطلاقا من هذه المعلومة التاريخية، تشيد إيزابيل ألليندي روايتها، وبطلتها عازفة بيانو، برفقة طبيب، كانا بين الفارين بحثا عن فرصة جديدة لحياة كريمة في تشيلي، التي يشبه موقعها الجغرافي في أميركا الجنوبية بتلة بحر طويلة، بتعبير نيرودا، الذي يحضر شعره في متن الرواية وفي مستهل كل فصل من فصولها.
