الرواية التاريخية مذبحة الفلاسفة تستعيد السنوات الأخيرة من حياة مدينة تدمر التي أصبحت في عصر ملكها أذينة عاصمة إمبراطورية المشرق، وتتحدث الرواية بلسان كاهن تدمر الأكبر في عهد الملكة زنوبيا، وتضيء على جوانب غامضة من تاريخ تلك المدينة التي تحولت في عهد ملكتها زنوبيا إلى مشروع مدينة فاضلة لم تأذن الظروف لها أن تكتمل، إذ هاجمت قوات الإمبراطور الروماني أورليانوس بمساعدة قوات بعض القبائل العربية جيوش زنوبيا وأنهت حكمها في العام 275 م، واقتيدت الملكة ومجلس حكمائها (الفلاسفة) محفورين إلى حمص حيث نصبت محكمة هناك حكمت على الفلاسفة بالإعدام وبالإقامة الجبرية على الملكة في قصر تيبور قرب روما.
