يتناول المؤلف (جون ماكوري) في هذا الكتاب (الوجودية) بتحليل طولى أي نشأتها وتاريخها، وآخر عرض يستعرض فيه مفاهيمها وموضوعاتها يتناول من قديم موضوعاتها على سبيل المثال : الحرية والقرار والوجود والماهية، ومن الموضوعات الجديدة : الفكر واللغة والتاريخ والمجتمع، فهو كتاب نادر ليس في المكتبة العربية فقط وإنما أيضا في اللغات الأجنبية وغير أنه يتناول موضوعات جديدة إلا أن الأهم في هذا الكتاب أنه يوضح الكثير من الأفكار المغلوطة عن الوجودية، ويبين كم أنها على علامة وثيقة بالدين بل بالتصوف على عكس ما هو متصور خاصة في البلاد العربية.
