يمكن دراسة الظواهر التاريخية الموسيقية بمعزل عن تطور المسائل الفنية وقد بذل المؤلف جهدا في إقامة نسب عادلة عند تصنيف الأحداث الموسيقية وبيان الأسباب العامة في حدوثها وتسلسل الصلة بين مختلف الفنانين واستخلاص نظام للمؤلفات تتعاقب فيه وتتسلسل بقدر ما تسمح به الحدود المرسومة لهذا الكتاب، كما حاول من جهة أخرى وضع التراث الموسيقي المتعدد الأنواع في عصوره وبقاعه التي نشأ وانتشر منها فضلا عن دراسته فيما أحاط به من تيارات فنية أو أدبية أو دينية أو سياسية. الموسيقى باعتبارها إحدى وسائل التعبير الطبيعي في المجتمع لا يعقل أن تكون متأخرة بنحو مائتي عام عن سائر وسائل التعبير الأخرى-فهي مرآة واضحة للتقاليد والأخلاق السائدة في حياة العصور ومن ثم تكون على اتصال وثيق بغيرها من سائر الفنون.
