يكون كتاب عيون الاخبار جامعا لقاح العقول، ونتاج أفكار الحكماء ونبذة الأشياء وحيلة الادب ثم هو قد أودعه كما يقول طرقا من محاسن كلام الزهاد في الدنيا، كما أنه لم يخل من نادرة طريفة، وفطنة لطيفة حتي لا يشعر القارئ بالتعب ويعرض عن الكتاب والكتاب ثمرة جهد طويل، وحين اجتمعت له تلك الحصيلة الكبيرة من أخبار وأشعار، أخذ في تقسيمها وتصنيفها، ليكون في اختياراته وتبويبه ثم بفهرسته، مبتدعا قريبا فيما ابتدع من أصحاب المدرسة الحديثة.
