هذا الكتاب هو عين على الحضارة الإسلامية في القرن الثاني الهجري إبان حكم \"هارون الرشيد\"، والمؤلف لا يسرد لنا فيه وقائع وأخبارا جافة، وإنما يضعنا في قلب الأحداث لنرى ونسمع، وذلك من خلال عشر رسائل يرسلها إلينا رحالة فارسي جاب أنحاء الدولة الإسلامية آنذاك ؛ فزار بغداد عاصمة الخلافة، وأقام هناك واصفا ما كان يدور فيها من مجالس العلم والأدب والفنون، وما كان يجري في قصور الخلفاء من صراع خفي بينهم وبين وزرائهم البرامكة. ثم غادر الرحالة إلى الشام، ومنها إلى تونس والقيروان، ثم الإسكندرية، ولما آن أوان الحج اتجه إلى بلاد الحجاز، ثم عاد إلى دار السلام من جديد. والرحلة وإن كانت متخيلة من إبداع مؤلفها، فإنها تستقي كل معلوماتها من كتب التراث الموثوق فيها، وتخرجها إخراجا أدبيا بديعا.
