هذا الكتاب أثر عباسي أصيل له قيمة أدبية وتاريخية محققة : فهو كتاب أدب يضم رصيدا كبيرا من الشواهد الشعرية المختارة، والأخبار فيه مروية بأسلوب نثري راق، هو أسلوب المدرسة الجاحظية بصفاته وتلويناته، وهو كتاب أخبار وحكايات تروي صورا من وقائع الأحداث ومشاهد الحياة للعصور التي تتصل بها، فهي أخبار واقعية تاريخية تعين على رصد الجوانب الحضارية والعمرانية والإجتماعية والبيئية للحياة في تلك العصور، وغرس النعمة المؤلف أديب مؤرخ ثقة مأمون، وكتابه ينفرد بأخبار لا نقع عليها في مصدر آخر. وكتاب (الهفوات) بعد كل ذلك كتاب إمتاع ومؤانسة وتسلية، يتيح للسامرين أن يجدوا فيه نوادر وملحا، فيها طرافة وعبرة، وتيسر لهم أن يدركوا كيف يزل الحذر الذكي العاقل، فتكون زلته هفوة مذكورة تتناقل المجالس أخبارها.
