جاء الكتاب في (103) صفحة، وهو مختارات من شعر المتنبي، ومن إعداد الشاعر السوري أدونيس، فابتدأ بترجمة للمتنبي، فكلمة لأدونيس، فمختارات مصحوبة برسوم حديثة للفنان ضياء العزاوي. يتحدث أدونيس في الافتتاحية بلغة ضبابية على غرار-أن شعر المتنبي فيه الشخصي والجماعي الفني والإنساني، الأصيل والصيرورة، ويتألف في هذا كله على الرغم من تناقضاته وربما بفضلها يلاحظ قارئ المتنبي أن اغلب شعره فيه التصادي والتقاطع، وهذا لا يعيبه أو يبخس مقداره، فميزته في جودة السبك والإخراج والتوصيل، وفي فنية الإبداع، ومع ذلك فما أكثر ما كان في المختارات-التي اختارها أدونيس-من تصاد وتقاطع.
