الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة مختارة من قصائد أعظم شعراء العرب في العهدين القديم والحديث، أبو الطيب المتنبي، وهو أحمد بن الحسين بن الحسن بن عبد أبو الطيب الكندي الكوفي، أفقه بني عصره في اللغة وقواعدها ومفرداتها وأسرارها، شجاع مقدام، خفيف الظل، يفخر الأدب العرب كله به شاعرا عربيا حكيما ذكيا، وشاعرا طموحا. قد اشتهر عنه بأنه مداح الملوك وتميز خياله بالقوة والخصابة فكانت ألفاظه جزلة، وعباراته رصينة، تلائم قوة روحه، وقوة معانيه، وهو ينطلق في عباراته انطلاقا ولا يعنى فيها كثيرا بالمحسنات والصناعة.
