هذا الكتاب هو أثر فريد في بابه وطريف في موضوعه وعنوانه، يعرض تاريخ المعرف البشرية عند الأمم القديمة وعند العرب في الجاهلية ثم في العصور الإسلامية الزهية. ففيه وصف دقيق للتعليم الإسلامي : أساليبه ومناهجه وتاريخ لمواضعه في سائر أقطار المشرق والمغرب. كما بين صاحبه أهمية تعليم المرأة في الإسلام بل ضرورته. كما تعرض بالتفصيل للتنبيه على مواطن الخلل التي أصابت مناهج التعليم في عصور الانحطاط، فأفاض في بيان أسباب تأخر العلوم و طرق تدريسها في العالم العربي عامة وفي جامع الزيتونة خاصة. ثم عرض طريقته للإصلاح التربوي والتعليمي بجرأة وإخلاص فأبان عن نظرة استشرافية منيرة وإحاطة وفهم للشريعة والواقع. فخط بذلك للأمة الإسلامية طريقا للنهوض والإصلاح ورسم لها منهجا قويما للنمو والفلاح.
