يبدو جون ديوى-بنظريته في الفن التي أودعها كتابه هذا-فيلسوفا مدهشا ومحيرا في الوقت ذاته، فنظريته في الفن هي من الرحابة وسعة الأفق بحيث تختلف مع العديد من النظريات الأخرى، وتتقاطع معها في الوقت ذاته، فهو يختلف مع التيار الكانطي الذى يؤكد على مبدأ النزاهة الجمالية وعلى تخليص الفن من الطابع العملي، ولكنه يتفق معه في القول بأن الجميل لا يتطابق مع النافع أو ما يخدم غرضا ما.
