يحاول الباحث مصطفى بن تمسك في كتابه تشخيص وضعية الحداثة في الطور العولمي الراهن، وذلك من خلال الإجابة عن مجموعة من الأسئلة أهمها : هل مازال من المشروع للغربيين أن يتكلموا عن الحداثة بعد موجات التشكيك والتظنن في أسسها ؟ وهل مازلنا نحن العرب نحلم باستزراع النموذج الحداثي المتهاوي هذا في تربتنا، بعد كل التجارب التعسفية الفاشلة ؟ ومن هنا تقوم أطروحة الكتاب على تبين أفول وتفكك الحداثة الأوروبية وتحولها إلى \"حداثة عولمية رأسمالية\" ترعاها الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، فالكتاب يرصد مراحل تفكك الحداثة الأوروبية من داخل سياقاتها الذاتية، قبل أن تنقذها أمريكا عن طريق تحويلها إلى عولمة رأسمالية.
