في هذه الرواية تستلهم الكاتبة الشهيرة \"كاثرين آبلجيت\" هذه الرواية من القصة الحقيقية لغوريلا السيلفرباك الأسير آيفان، حيث يمضي آيفان سبعة وعشرين عاما من حياته وحيدا بين جدران غرفته الزجاجية داخل مركز تجاري صغير خارج المدينة، يعتاد خلالها على نظرات البشر المبحلقة فيه وهو عاكف على الأوراق البيضاء، يرسم لوحاته بأقلام التلوين، لتباع لاحقا في محل الهدايا التذكارية ببضع دولارات زهيدة. يعتاد آيفان أيضا على النسيان، نسيان التفكير في نفسه والتساؤل عن حياته وحقيقته وما يعني أن يكون غوريلا سيلفرباك مهيب، يعيش بين أبناء جنسه، يمتلك عائلة صغيرة يمنحها الحب والحماية.
