يتناول الكتاب مظاهر الحداثة والتغريب التي تشق طريقها إلى مدينة القاهرة منذ أن وطأ الفرنسيون أرضها محتلين أواخر القرن الثامن عشر، وما برحت هذه المظاهر فى التعاظم إبان القرن التاسع عشر، مكتسحة أمامها أصالة ضربت بجذورها في هذه الأرض، فطبعت بطابع حضارتها الإسلامية كل ما يمت للإنسان بصلة مشكلة حياته وعاداته نافذة إلى مسكنه وملبسه فنونه وعمائره فسارعت أسراب الرحالة المستشرقين متدافعة من ذلك الوقت وكأنها مودعة أو مشيعة لتنهل من معين هذه الأصالة قبل أن يواريها النسيان خلف سيل الموضة الأوروبية الآخذة فى السيادة يوما بعد يوم.
