هنا ينشر للمرة الأولى السجل الخاص لصداقة عميقة وعلاقة حب رومانسي مع الأدب استمرت على امتداد المسار الطويل لحياة كاتبين، رغم الظروف كلها. بدأت بغداء تم مصادفة في محيط مدينة باريس في أواخر عام ۱۹۳۱، وذلك عندما تعرفت أنييس نن، زوجة هيو بارکر غويلر ذات الثمانية والعشرين عاما، وكانت في ذلك الوقت امرأة شابة على أهبة الاستعداد للانطلاق في مغامرة عقلية وجسدية، إلى هنري ميللر، « الكاتب المتشرد » ، کما لقبه أحد الأصدقاء ، الذي كان سيبلغ الأربعين من العمر في السادس والعشرين من شهر كانون الأول (ديسمبر) التالي. وكانت الظواهر كلها تدل على أنهما متنافران، لكنهما كانا يشتركان في أمر واحد : کلاهما كانا كاتبين ناشئين وعاشقين شغوفين للكلمة.
