يرى \"محمد كرد علي\" أنه لا غنى عن التزود من القديم، أثناء معايشة الحديث من الأدب والتاريخ، وأنه يجب ألا يطغى القديم فتصبح عداوة الحديث منهجا متبعا. ولما كانت هذه القضية ذات شأن لدى مخيلة المؤلف، أراد أن يقدم ما نشره في كثير من الصحف والمجلات بين يدي القراء ليكون لهم عضدا وسندا في وقت آثر البعض فيه الجمود على القديم، وقطع الصلة بينه وبين المدنية الحديثة، وسار البعض الآخر وراء من ينادي بتطليق الماضي ونسيانه، وهو بذلك يضع منهجا ثقافيا يحاول من خلاله أن يوازن بين مدرستين ومنهجين في هذه المجموعة من المقالات والأبحاث التي تتعرض لأمور شتى في التاريخ والأعلام واللغات والموسيقى والسياسة والفكر فى دوامة سحرية مليئة بالأشخاص الغريبين.
