لقد خص الفيلسوف أوغست كونت كتابه هذا لتقديم شروح تمهيدية حول العلاقة الأساس والمباشرة للعملية النظرية التي تسعى لتأسيس علم الاجتماع، مبينا الضعف الكبير للمدارس السياسية والفكرية المتناقضة التي كانت سائدة آنذاك. إنه كتاب يتناول السمات الرئيسة للمنهج الوضعي في دراسة الظواهر الاجتماعية، ويؤكد على الصلات الضرورية لعلم الاجتماع مع باقي فروع الفلسفة الوضعية، وهو يؤكد أن النظام والتقدم يشكلان شرطين إجباريين متساويين للحضارة الحديثة، إذ لا يمكن لأي نظام واقعي أن يتوطد، أو أن يدوم إن لم يكن متآلفا مع التقدم، وأي تقدم لن يكون مكتملا واقعيا إذا لم ينزع إلى التوطيد الواضح للنظام؛ إن أي انفصال بين أفكار هذين العاملين ينعكس عيبا أساسا في الوضع الاجتماعي، وهو يشير إلى الدور السلبي للاهوت المتجسد بالصلة الطبيعية بين الفكر العسكري والفكر اللاهوتي إذ يؤمن له التكريس الكافي والخضوع الشديد والكامل الذي يوطده ويديمه أكثر.
