يتناول الكتاب ثورة أكتوبر السودانية في العام 1964 م، فهو يعد توثيقا للثورة ونظرة إليها من جهة قل أن يتناولها الناس، النظرة للثورة من حكايات الناس العاديين، وكان انحياز كليف هنا لطرف الحقيقة ومحاولة التجرد في نقل الأحداث . وبالنظر إلى أنه قد كتب الكثير عن ثورة أكتوبر بأقلام السودانيين فالراجح أن ما يمنح كتابة كليف فرادتها أنها كتبت بعين الغريب المعاصر للأحداث، فكان كليف وقتها محاضرا حدثا للقانون بجامعة الخرطوم وكان وقتها في عامه الرابع بالسودان . اندلعت الثورة في النهاية ، ولكنها أول الأمر بدأت في الاشتعال رويدا رويدا ، فقد سئم الناس دكتاتورية الفريق عبود وحكمه العسكري.
