لا تخلو أي ثقافة إنسانية من وجود الأمثال والمأثورات الشعبية التي تلخص حكمتها وتعكس جزءا من فلسفتها وذاكرتها الجمعية، فتظهر فيها التقاليد والموروثات، حيث تعبر الشعوب عن مشاعرها تجاه ما يحيط بها من أحداث، وتنقل تجربتها للأجيال القادمة في كلمات قليلة وعبارات مقتضبة. وبلغ من أهمية هذه الأمثال أن درسها علماء الأنثربولوجي والتاريخ ليسدوا النقص في معلوماتهم التاريخية عن بعض الفترات، ويقفون على أحوال المجموعات البشرية. والكتاب الذي بين يديك جمع فيه المؤلف أمثالا وحكما عربية وأخرى غربية في موضوعات شتى كان هدفها الدعوة للفضائل، وإذكاء الحماسة والطموح، والتحلي بالشمائل الطيبة، وكذلك الحض على العلم والسعي في اكتساب الرزق، والتنفير من سوء الأخلاق والعادات السيئة، وذلك على لسان أهل الفضل والعلم من علماء وحكماء وأدباء كبار.
