يعتبر كتاب المختار في كشف الأسرار دليلا شاملا لحيل الخداع والغش التي تمت ممارستها في القرن الثالث عشر في مدن الشرق الأوسط، خاصة في سوريا ومصر. والمؤلف الجوبري كان ضليعا بالممارسات التي وصفها، وربما كان هو نفسه مخادعا ثم صلح حاله وتاب. ويكشف كتابه المقسم إلى ثلاثين فصلا أسرار جميع المخادعين بدءا من \"أولئك الذين ادعوا النبوة\" ومرورا بـ\"أولئك الذين ادعوا إصابتهم بالجذام\" و\"أولئك الذين يصبغون الخيل\" لقد أغنى الكاتب مادته أحيانا بخبراته الخاصة في الكيمياء والتنجيم وعلم الرمل، وبجهوده المكثفة في البحث أحيانا أخرى. فخرج كتابه فريدا منظما مفصلا، وضم مقاربة شاملة لموضوع غامض بطبيعته، وله صلته لا بالتاريخ الاجتماعي فحسب بل بتاريخ العلوم أيضا. إن كتاب المختار في كشف الأسرار بتغطيته الشاملة بدءا من الكتابة غير المرئية إلى المعالجة بالأحجار الكريمة وبالشعوذة، يفتح نافذة رائعة على ثقافة فرعية لطائفة من المتسولين والمحتالين المحترفين في العصور الوسطى للعالم العربي.
