هذا الكتاب ليس كتابا سرديا للتاريخ الإريتري بقدر ما هو كتاب للـ (وقفات) والتحليل للأسباب والخلفيات المؤثرة على موقف سكان إريتريا من الصراعات والغزوات المتتالية لهذا البلد المتشاطىء مع الجزيرة العربية ومصر والسودان وجيبوتي على البحر الأحمر. عبر أربعة فصول، الأول منها حوى تعريفيا تحليليا بامتياز عن تشكل هذا الكيان المسمى إريتريا بكل معوقات الانسجام فيه من اختلاف الأديان والتضاريس والامتدادات الجغرافية والعرقية والثقافية واللغوية، والثاني منها يناقش شكل إريتريا في الفترة ما بين الحربين الكونيتين، ثم يخوض الفصل الثالث في تداعيات القرار الفيدرالي، وأخيرا يناقش الفصل الرابع بطريقة مسهبة العلاقة والخلافات بين حركة تحرير إريتريا وجبهة التحرير الإريترية.
