يروي لنا كورتيلمون في هذا الكتاب الممتع وقائع رحلته إلى مكة المكرمة لأداء فريضة الحج، وكذلك إلى المدينة المنورة للصلاة في المسجد النبوي الشريف والتشرف بالسلام على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ويصف إعجابه الشديد بالإسلام وفضائله، فقام بإعلان إسلامه ومارس شعائر الصلاة والصيام والحج بكل تقى، وتفاعل مع أصدقائه من الجزائريين ومن أهل الحجاز بكل مودة، وإن كان خشي من الاعتراف بإسلامه في كتابه هذا الذي نشر بفرنسا عام 1896م، فادعى أنه \"\"يحب الشرق ويحب الإسلام ببساطته ومعتقداته الراسخة، دون أن يكون له الجرأة على اعتناقها\"\". لكن مع ذلك، يبقى الكتاب وثيقة وجدانية شفافة تدل على تفاعل إيجابي حميم من مثقف غربي تجاه حضارتنا الإسلامية.\"
