هذا الكتاب يتحدث عن البرازيل وحالتها الاقتصادية والعسكرية والسياسية، حيث أنه، يختلف الباحثون في أصل تسمية البرازيل وإن كان عدد من المصادر يرجع الاسم إلى أصل برتغالي-إسباني لكلمة \"برازيل\" وهو نوع من الأشجار ذات الجذوع الحمراء والبنية، والتي وجدها المستكشفون على شواطئ العالم الجديد مشابهة لأشجار المنطقة المدارية في جزر غربي الأصباغ الحمراء والبرتقالية. ويرجع آخرون الاسم إلى جزر أسطورية في المحيط الأطلسي كانت تقع في مكان ما غرب الساحل الأيرلندي وعرفت باسم \"هي برازيل\" والتي تعني أرض العظمة والقوة والجمال\"، وعلى هذا النحو جاء وصول البحارة والمستكشفين البرتغاليين إلى العالم الجديد بمثابة تحقيق لحلم الوصول إلى تلك الجزر الخرافية التي طالما خلبت ألباب المغامرين.
