من قتل أميري البرج في إنجلترا أواخر القرن الخامس عشر ؟ عمهما السفاح ريتشارد الثالث أم خليفته على العرش هنري السابع ؟ ذلك هو اللغز الذي حير الشرطي غرانت وهو يقبع في منتصف القرن العشرين طريح الفراش بغرفة ضيقة في أحد مستشفيات لندن، بعد أن سقط في حفرة إثر تعقبه لأحد اللصوص. يتخذ البحث عن الحقيقة في رواية جوزفين تاي البوليسية منحنى خاصا وغير مألوف. لم يكن شرطى سكوتلاند بارد يملك من أدوات التحقيق سوى ذكائه وفطنته، وسقف يتأمله وهو مستلق على ظهره، وبورتريه للمتهم الرئيس يتفرس فيه، وطالب تاريخ أمريكي يأتيه من حين إلى آخر بمرويات المؤرخين. تستحيل الرواية البوليسية إلى رواية حول التبش في مفهوم التاريخ وموثوقية السند والخبر. ويحيلنا لغز مقتل الأميرين إلى لغز الحياة الأكبر : هل غاية وجودنا في هذه الحياة إيجاد الحقيقة أم نشدانها والسعي وراءها ؟ وحده الزمن كفيل بحل هذا اللغز.
