انقلبت روسيا رأسا على عقب بعد أن صرح الفيلسوف الروسي «تولستوي» بتخطئة الكنيسة وهدم ما تبنيه من معتقدات رآها هو غير صحيحة ؛ إذ أنكر عليها عقائدها بدعوى أنها من وضع البشر، وتخالف أحكام الإنجيل مخالفة صريحة. ورأى «تولستوي» أن جميع الكنائس ومذاهب المسيحية تتشابه في بعض المعتقدات، فبحث في أصول هذه المعتقدات وأرجعها إلى أصولها ؛ فخلص إلى أن جميعها تنبع من معين واحد، وأن جميع الأناجيل بها ما هو موضوع وما هو صحيح، فآثر أن يجمع ما صح منها في كتاب سماه «إنجيل تولستوي»، وإن لم يكن الكتاب حقيقة نطق بها صاحبها، فهو جوهرة انفصلت عن أشعة فكر الفيلسوف الذي لم يبخل على الناس بما في ضميره ؛ فبسط لهم قلبه كتابا يقرءونه، ويتحسسون بأبصارهم وبصائرهم ما يشاءون منه.
