يعد هذا الكتاب من أوائل الكتب التي عنيت بتسجيل تاريخ «حماة» المدينة السورية العريقة، مشتملا على أحداثها الكبرى منذ نشأتها وحتى بدايات القرن العشرين. والمؤلف من واقع معايشته للمدينة بوصفه ابنا من أبنائها، نشأ وعاش فيها، وشغف بتقصي أخبارها فيما عاصرة وفيما سبقه يستعرض «أحمد بن إبراهيم الصابوني» تاريخ مدينته بدءا من عصر الحيثيين الذي يرجع إلى نحو 2500 سنة قبل الميلاد، مرورا بحروبهم مع المصريين، ثم عصر بني إسرائيل، يليه اليوناني، فالروماني، وصولا إلى عصر الحكم الإسلامي. ويقدم الصابوني وصفا مفصلا للمدينة القديمة، متناولا أبرز معالمها العمرانية والحضارية، وخصائص سكانها، ويأتي كذلك على ذكر عدد من أعلام حماة وفضلائها الغابرين.
