كتب البردوني مستطرفه المعاصر، ونشره تحت هذا العنوان في صحيفة الوحدة بصنعاء، التي كانت متنفسا حرا لكل الكتاب، ولم يكن في مستطرفه هذا إلا معبرا عن موقفه وساخرا من واقعه، من خلال إعادة إنتاج دلالة السياق المتصل والمتقاطع بين المتن والواقع، فقد غام خيال المستقبل، فأصبح الميل إلى التأمل والسخرية هو الملاذ حتى تتضح ملامح المرحلة يتكون الكتاب من ستة وثلاثين مقالا نشرها الشاعر البردوني تحت نفس العنوان في صحيفة الوحدة الأسبوعية خلال الفترة (ديسمبر 1990، وحتى مارس 1993).. وفيها متابعات وقصص ونوادر ثقافية عن أحداث وشخصيات ثقافية وفنية وسياسية ومؤلفات عربية وعالمية، غنية جدا بالإثارة والتشويق وكفيلة بلفت الاهتمام والانتباه وبفتح آفاق جديدة ومغايرة حول موسوعية الأستاذ البردوني.
