يتحدث الكتاب عن الاستشراق حيث حتى وقت قريب لم تكن تبدو دراسة شعوب وحضارات الشرق من قبل الغربيين وكأنها بحاجة لمن يدافع عنها أو يثني عليها وذلك لأنها كانت تعد من أكثر فروع العلم مسالمة ووداعة وكان المستشرق يعد باحثا اختار بمحض إرادته أن يركز همه العلمي على أحد قطاعات المعرفة الأبعد عنه من حيث المكان والزمان ولقد كان الاستشراق أولا أحد الجوانب المتفرعة عن عصر التنوير والرومانطيقية ثم عن الوضعية والمادية والتاريخية الأوروبية وإذا ما أردنا أن نكتب تاريخه الكامل فإن ذلك يتطلب منا أن نعيد كتابة كل تطور ثقافة الغرب على تلك الأرضية التي زرعت فيها خارج نطاق الغرب وفيما وراء الغرب.
