يعد عبدالرحمن الكواكبي (1855-1902) من أكبر رواد النهضة العربية في القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي ويعد كتابه طبائع الاستبداد ومصارع الاستعباد انه لا نظير له في تراثنا القديم أو الحديث وهو أفضل ما يمكن أن تستنير به عقول وقلوب الشعوب التي تريد محاربة الاستبداد والتخلص منه. فالاستبداد أعظم بلاء من الله لعباده الخاملين فالمستبد يتجاوز الحد ما لم يرى حاجزا من حديد، والمستبد يود أن تكون رعيته كالغنم في الطاعة وكالكلاب في التذلل والتملق فهو عدو الحق والحرية. ولا بد لنا أن نفيق فقد خلق الله الإنسان حرا قائده العقل لا الجهل .
