يسرد هذا الكتاب نص المحاضرة التذكارية لبرنامج أنيس المقدسي للآداب في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، والتي ألقاها البروفسور سليم دكاش اليسوعي، رئيس جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت، وعنوانها \"الجامعة الأميركية والجامعة اليسوعية في بيروت، العمق التاريخي لرسالتيهما التربوية وآفاق المستقبل\" وذلك بتاريخ 8 تشرين الثاني (نوفمبر) 2017، الساعة السادسة مساء، في قاعة محاضرات كولدج هول B1، في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت . يستعرض الكتاب مسارات المسارات التاريخية للمؤسستين / الجامعيتين، وتحدياتهما المشتركة اليوم، ومساهمات غنية منذ إنشائهما، والمقصود من هذا كله، أن يكون تفكيرا من أجل فتح النقاش حول الماضي، بل وأكثر، حول المستقبل. ويبدأ الكتاب بمدخل تاريخي يعود إلى القرن الثامن عشر-زمن التأسيس-وأبرز رواده مرورا بالمرحلة العثمانية (1914) التي أغلقت فيها السلطة العثمانية جامعة القديس يوسف وحولتها إلى ثكنة عسكرية بعدما هجر الآباء اليسوعيون خصوصا الفرنسيون منهم نظرا إلى ارتباط الجامعة بالدولة الفرنسية ... يتبع ذلك مرحلة (البدايات) وعلامات مضيئة من زمن التأسيس من الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت وجامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت. ثم إضاءة على شخصيتين نموذجيتين من الجامعتين \"وهما الدكتور كورنيليوس فان دايك، ولويس شيخو. ثم ينتقل ليعالج \"مسألة الحريات الدينية وآثار حرب لبنان\"، وحديث آخر عن \"التقليد والحداثة\" بين القومية اللبنانية والقومية العربية، وقبسات عن تأسيس النظام الجامعي اللبناني، ومستقبل دراسات اللغة العربية وآدابها والعلوم الإسلامية والعلوم الشرق أوسطية في هاتين الجامعتين، وطرح موضوع البحث العلمي بمختلف وجوهه للنقاش، ووضع الدراسات القانونية والشرعية وتحدي الإكتساب اللغوي للدارسين. هذا وقد جاء الكتاب باللغتين العربية والفرنسية.
