هذا الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة من المقالات المنشورة في المجلات الأكاديمية خلال مسيرة الكاتب العلمية عبر فترات متفاوتة، ويعد هذا الكتاب هو إحدى المحاولات اللسانية للكتاب العراقيين، فكان لشظايا لسانية بصمة في علم اللسانيات، إذ حاول مؤلفه عرض كثير من قضايا علم اللغة الحديث ابتداء من تعريف اللغة وانتهاء بعرض موجز لأهم مذاهب الفن الحديث في القرن التاسع عشر، فالكتاب مقسم ليس كما هو مألوف في تأليف الكتب من حيث الشكل، إذ لم يتضمن فصول والفصول تتضمن موضوعات أو أبوابا بل كانت طريقة عرضه تتميز بعرض الموضوعات كل منها على حدة، فساهمت هذه الطريقة بالتعرف على أكبر قدر ممكن من قضايا علم اللغة الحديث بمختلف أجناسه، فحوى الكتاب على أكثر من عشرين موضوعا.
