يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى مناقشة وتحليل التخطيط الحضري من المنظور الجغرافي وليس الهندسي كمحاولة لبيان دور الجغرافيا التي يساء فهمها كثيرا من أنها تعنى فقط بمواقع الظواهر وأسماء البلدان والعواصم والأنهار، إن هذا الفهم الخاطئ للجغرافيا أدى كثيرا إلى عدم إشراك الجغرافي في وضع الخطط الحضرية، فضلا عن استبعاده عن المساهمة في الخطط إلا النزر اليسير عموما مما أفقد كثيرا من الخطط ما يمكن أن نسميه النظرة الشاملة الطبيعية والبشرية والبيئية التـي يتدثر بها الجغرافي، وهذا ما نوضحه في هذا الكتاب.
