لطالما تساءلت عن موضوعية هذا النص، الإنسان الأخير : الطاعون بعد أن قرر ريموند الذهاب لأثينا من أجل المشاركة في الحرب الوشيكة بين الأثينيين والأتراك، والمجد الذي طالما ركض خلفه، يلحق به ليونيل من أجل الصداقة، وأخته زوجة ريموند التي لا دافع لها سوى الحب والندم. ولكن أين ريموند؟ تفجرت مأساة بين أفراد أسرته التي لحقت به، وخاف الجيش الأثيني من بطش الأتراك بعد أن تمكنوا من قائد جيوشهم وألقوه في الحبس. ملحمة الحب والصراع من أجل الرفعة والشرف في الكتاب الثاني من هذه الرواية النفيسة، وتطاولت عبر الحدود والزمن إلى المدى الذي عم العالم، آخذة بمشاعر القارئ يمنة ويسرة، صوب سعادة اللقاء، ورعب الفقد ... إلى أن نزل الموت. تستمر ولم يكن مثل أي موت.
