يمثل كتاب «الحركة الأدبية في بلاد الشام» في جزئيه أول محاولة جمعية لتقديم مسح طائر محلق للأدب في واحدة من أقدم بقاع العالم في التاريخ الإنساني. تتتبع مسيرته من اختراع الكتابة في مطلع الألف الثالثة قبل الميلاد وحتى مطالع الألف الثالثة بعده، وتشمل عصوره المختلفة بدءا من آداب ما قبل سيادة اللغة العربية في الشرق القديم، مرورا بالأدب العربي في العصر الجاهلي فعصر صدر الإسلام، فالعصر الأموي، فالعصر العباسي، فالعصر المملوكي فالعصر العثماني، وانتهاء بالعصر الحديث مستكشفة آفاق تطوره المستقبلية في بدايات الألف الثالثة الميلادية حيث يواجه الأدب العربي العولمة وثورة الاتصالات والمواجهات المتعددة الوجوه والمستويات بين الإسلام والغرب.
