كانت أحداث أيلول الأسود نقطة فارقة في التاريخ العربي المعاصر، إذ أصبح صادما للجميع أن التعايش الأردني-الفلسطيني تحت مظلة المشروع العربي القومي لم يصمد أمام إشكاليات الواقع وتناقضات هذا المشروع نفسه، ولم تكن هذه هى المرة الأولى ... فعلى الرغم من اختلاف التفاصيل، فإن نفس الأسباب تقريبا هي التي أفضت –قبل ذلك- إلى انهيار الوحدة بين مصر وسوريا، ثم في مرحلة لاحقة إلى الاقتتال الفلسطيني-اللبناني أيضا، ولكن بعيدا عن الظروف والملابسات التاريخية السياسية التي ستظل ملكا للتاريخ.
