أخذ مفهوم عالم الجنوب يتردد في أدبيات العلاقات الدولية بدلا من مفهوم العالم الثالث الذي أخذ يختفي بعد أن فقد مدلوله مع اختفاء العالم الثاني. وأصبح عالم الجنوب يعبر عن تكتل جيوسياسي وجيواقتصادي له خصائصه الاقتصادية والسياسية والأيديولوجية التي تميزه عن عالم الشمال الصناعي. وحيث إن علاقة الشمال بالجنوب تؤثر في الأمن والسلام الدوليين، فإن هذه الدراسة تتناول تطور مفهوم عالم الجنوب وخصائصه خلال الحرب الباردة، والتحديات التي تواجه الجنوب بعد نهاية تلك الحرب، وأثر ذلك على طبيعة النظام الدولي، من خلال نظرية فرانسيس فوكوياما ونهاية التاريخ، ونظرية صموئيل هنتنجتون \"صدام الحضارات\".
