هذه الرواية أول قصة كويتية. قصة الغوص على اللؤلؤ، تقاليد البحارة وعاداتهم، وأساليب معيشتهم أثناء رحلتهم السنوية الشاقة، عواطفهم وآمالهم، التي تتماوج في نفوسهم مع كل اندفاعة إلى قاع البحر بحثا عن المحار المغلق قصة الغوص... في صراعه الأبدي مع المحار المقيم في الرمال وبين الصخور في قاع البحر، نموذج رائع للإنسان العجيب الذي يقترب من حافة الموت، حتى إذا ما ابتعد يعاود الاقتراب، يفعل ذلك عشرات المرات كل يوم، يدفعه إلى ذلك، غريزة الحياة، وشيء يلهب مشاعره وعقله لاكتشاف الأسرار في بطون المحار. وهو سواء في نجاحه، أو فشله، يغني لليل، وللبحر، والموج (يا ليلة دانه).
