يجتمع كتاب اللمع خصائص لم تتوافر لغيره من الكتب التي تحدثت عن الحياة الروحية الإسلامية، ومن هذه الخصائص هي أنه أقدم مرجع صوفي إسلامي، فضلا على كونه أكبر المراجع وأوثقها وأغزرها مادة، وأنقاها جوهرا ولفظا، وهو ما جعله منهلا خصبا لكل من أرخ للتصوف، فعلى ضوء مناهجه وأبوابه وقواعده جرت أقلام الذين قدموا للتاريخ أنواع العلوم لذلك فيمكننا تصنيف كتاب اللمع على انه كتاب تاريخ ومدرسة علم وطريق ذوق وإشعاع يرشد السالكين ويعلم العلماء أو كما وصفه نيكلسون \"مدرسة عليا لتخريج الفحول من المتصوفة الصادقين\".
