إن للأدب العربي في الجاهلية وفي صدر الإسلام روائعه وأربابه، وقد آثر بطرس البستاني أن يجمعهم بين دفتي هذا الذي تناول فيه حياتهم وآثارهم ونقدا لهذه الآثار، وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن المؤلف أغنى دراسته الأدبية التاريخية هذه باستهلال ضم لمحة تاريخية وجغرافية لديار العرب، ومن ثم تم التطرق إلى أحوال العرب الاجتماعية مستعرضا بعدها لغتهم وأدبهم لينطلق بعد ذلك في رحاب استعراض أدبائهم وأدبهم الذي عمد إلى نقده، وقد ضم الجزء الأول من هذا المؤلف أدب وأدباء العصر الجاهلي وصدر الإسلام، وضم الجزء الثاني والرابع أدب وأدباء العرب في الأندلس وعصر الانبعاث، وتم تخصيص الجزء الخامس للشعراء والفرسان. ولا ننسى أن المؤلف وعند كل حقبة كانت له دراسة تاريخية اجتماعية سياسية أعطى من خلالها صورة عن تلك الحقبة.
