يحكي لنا أوليفيه رولان على إمتداد صفحات هذه الرواية قصه أليكسي الذي ولد في أوكرانيا وترعرع في عائلة من أصول نبيله إلا أنه يقرر ترك كل شيء خلفه ويعتنق الشيوعية. الغيوم هي مجال اختصاص أليكسي فيودوسفيتش، الغيوم الممتدة في سماء إتحاد الجمهوريات السوفيتية الإشتراكية. الطائرات تستعين بتنبؤاته للهبوط والسفن لكي تشق طريقها في الجليد، والجرافات لحراثة الأرض. وكان بمقدوره سبر طبقات الغلاف الجوي الستراتوسفير بأدواته الخاصة ويبذل قصارى جهده لتطوير إمكانياته وكله عزم على أن يساهم من موقع عمله في بناء النظام الإشتراكي الناشئ في بلده.
