طفل يبلغ من العمر تسع سنوات، يعيش مع جده الذي تربطه به علاقة قوية، حيث يرعاه الجد ويصطحبه للمدرسة، بل ويقرأ له كل يوم. وكغيره من الأطفال، يتمرد الطفل كاي كاي على جده أحيانا ويتناقشان بود أحيانا، ويغضب كل منهما الآخر أحيانا ويضحكان كثيرا، ويبكيان أيضا معا في هذه الرواية يخوض كاي كاي تجربة ممتعة مع القراءة، فالجد يقرأ له، وهو يقرأ لكلبه الصغير، وتثني عليه معلمته بالصف لبراعته ولباقته ومشاكساته اللطيفة. وهذه الرواية تجمع بين قيمتين كبريين، الأولى هي العلاقات الإنسانية الحميمة بين الأطفال وآبائهم وأجدادهم وأصدقائهم، بل وعلاقاتهم بالحيوانات أيضا، أما القيمة الأخرى فهي القراءة، وتبرز الرواية كيف أن القراءة وسيلة للإمتاع والمعرفة على حد سواء.
