الكتاب عبارة عن قصتان قصيرتان الأولى قصة هل فعلها تدور أحداثها في الريف الإنجليزي فهناك توجد جريمة قتل لا يعرف قاتلها والغريب هنا أن بطل القصة كلب مدلل جدا وهذا الدلال المفرط كما نعلم يؤدي إلى الغرور واللامبالاة والتكبر إلا أنه يصاب بخيبة أمل عندما يهمش من قبل صاحبه الذي كان يهتم به فهنا تنقلب غطرسة وكبرياء الكلب إلى طغيان واستبداد. أما القصة الثانية فهري بعنوان ليبوريلا دور أحداثها في أحد الوديان بالنمسا وهنا أيضا جريمة قتل مخفية التفاصيل وهي عن سيدة في العقد الرابع من العمر ولدت من علاقة غير شرعية تربت في كنيسة وعملت في الخدمة المنزلية وهي قبيحة جدا وتفتقر لأي لمحة أنثوية بطيئة الفهم ذو ملامح جافة وقاسية فهناك فقدان ومحو للشخصية الإنسانية والتي تنتقل شخصيتها من دور الجمود والصرامة لتتغير تدريجيا لتصبح أكثر اهتماما بنفسها بعد عشقها لسيدها.
