أحدثت هذه الرسالة ضجة كبيرة في الأوساط الدينية فقد تم اتهامه بنشر أفكار جريئة ومعادية للعقائد الدينية الكنسية الذاك ثم حكم عليه بالسجن لمدة ثلاثة أشهر في حصن قصر فانسين (Chateau de Vincennes)، بسبب الآراء المادية التي تضمنتها الرسالة رغم أنه قد نشرها في النسخة الأولى باسم مستعار ؛ يعد هذا الكتاب من أهم إنتاجات ديدرو الأدبية في عصر التنوير، فهو يقدم محاكمة منطقية وجميلة لكاتب اشتهر ببراعة استنتاجاته الفلسفية التي شكلت أساسا ومرجعا لمفكري عصر التنوير وما زال تأثيره الفكري يمتد إلى يومنا هذا.
