كانت الإسكندرية في العشرينيات بلد الخواجات، حتى إن اللغة المتداولة فيها كانت في معظم الأحيان لغة أجنبية، فرنسية أو إيطالية أو يونانية أو إنجليزية، لكن جمال المدينة كان لا يوصف، وكنت من شدة نظافتها بإمكاني أن أكل الأكل من على أرضها... كنت تجد في الإسكندرية كل ما هو موجود في أوروبا لكن بنصف الثمن، من دور السينما والمطاعم والمرافق، لكن ذلك كله كان للأجانب، وكنا متفرجين من الخارج، فقد كان أهل الإسكندرية الحقيقيون يسكنون الأحياء الشعبية، ولم يكونوا يظهرون في الرمل إلا كباعة جائلين أو كماسحي أحذية ... إلخ، ولقد كانت هناك دار سينما صيفية في بداية شارع سعد زغلول، ولم تعد موجودة الآن، كان فيها جزء مخصص للمصريين مكتوب عليه بالفرنسية Pour les indigenes أي للمواطنين الأصليين.
