يتألف هذا الكتاب من ثلاثة عشر فصلا مع ملحق ضمنه الناشر ردود المؤلف على ناقدي نظريته. وقد كان معظمهم من أنصار اتجاه الوضعية القانونية. تتعلق عموما الفصول الأولى من 1 إلى 6 بنقاش دووركين لهذا الاتجاه السائد في فقه القانون الأنجلو-أميركي، وتقديم نظريته التي يطرحها بديلا عنه لقصوره، في رأيه، عن حماية الحقوق وأخذها على محمل الجد. أما الفصول من 6 إلى 13 فهي لا تتعرض حصرا إلى المسائل ذات الصلة المباشرة بفلسفة القانون، وإنما تتعداها إلى مسائل فلسفية وسياسية عامة، مثل العدالة والحقوق، ومسألة العصيان المدني في دولة القانون، وموقف الليبرالية من أولوية الحرية، وحدود الحرية في مجتمع ديمقراطي، وقضية التمييز الإيجابي، وغيرها من القضايا التي يتطرق إليها دووركين مبينا قوة الموقف الليبرالي واتساقه، والذي يتبناه ويدافع عنه حيال هذه المسائل.
