هذا الكتاب ثمرة مطالعات التوحيدي ومشاهداته وسماعاته وقد ذكر في مطلع كتابه المصادر الرئيسية التي اعتمد عليها في تصنيفه هذا الأثر الضخم فهي تشتمل الى جانب مؤلفات الجاحظ على أمهات الكتب المعروفة مثل النوادر للأعرابي والكامل للمبرد وعيون الأخبار لابن قتيبة هذا عدا القرآن والسنة ولا شك في أن التوحيدي أقدم على اختيار ما اختار وتدوين ما دون بدافع من ذوقه وهواه ومزاجه وثقافته الدينية التقليدية ومذهبه الفلسفي في الاعتزال.
