تدرس نظرية المشيرات في السرد العملية التي يتمثل فيها القارئ عالم القصة السردي من خلال أربعة مشيرات تتعلق : بالشخصيات، والمكان والزمان، والموضوع، فحين يبدأ القارئ بالاطلاع على قصة ما فإنه ينتقل افتراضيا ليصبح داخل عالمها، ويقفل خلفه الباب، ليبدأ مباشرة بتتبع مشيراتها ؛ فيلاحق الشخصيات ليحدد أوصافها ووجهات نظرها وحجم أفعاله وقيمتها، ويمثل مكانها وإطار حركتها وزمانه، والموضوع الذي يهتم به، ليصل في النهاية إلى المراكز الإرشادية البنيوية التي تتقاطع فيها المشيرات لتعكس الحركة السردية للقصة حتى نهايتها.
