تناول الكتاب حيث عبرالمؤلف، في تحليله لأسباب التطور ومظاهره، تجاوز البيئة العربية بثقافتها ومكوناتها، إلى البيئة الغربية، والتمس في ثقافتها التي اتصل بها نفر غير قليل من الشعراء والكتاب العرب المحدثين، مصدرا قبسوا منه وتأثروا به. ولم يصدر المؤلف أحكامه في هذا المجال، وإنما حرص على أن يسلط الضوء على مظاهر هذا التأثر، وأن يظاهر الحكم الذي يصدره بسنده من النماذج الشعرية العربية التي تنضج فيها الظاهرة المعينة، مصحوبة في بعض الأحيان بمصادرها التي احتذتها من الشعر الغربي. وبهذا ينهج البحث منهج الدراسة الأدبية المقارنة بالمعنى الإصطلاحي لهذه الكلمة عند المتخصصين.
