إن ما دعا المؤلف موفق الدين عبد اللطيف بن يوسف البغدادي (المتوفى سنة 629 هـ) إلى وضع هذا الكتاب هو كونه وجد لابن سينا تصانيف مخالفة لرأي المشائين، فأراد أن ينبه طالبي العلم بأنهم لا يغتروا بتأليفه، وذلك من خلال تجلية آراء أرسطو والمشائين مما ألصقه ابن سينا بهم، فالبغدادي يرى أن فلسفة ابن سينا لا تزداد بالتمام إلا نقصا، ولذلك أراد أن ينبه طالبي العلم إلى قراءاته المغلوطة وأن لا يغتروا بها، كما أن البغدادي في كتابه إنما يحاول بناء نظام ميتافيزيقي جديد، معتمدا خطا كل من الكندي والفارابي راجعا في كل ذلك إلى أصول يونانية توسلا منه إلى تنقية آراء المشائين من الشوائب التي لحقت نظامهم الفلسفي البديع وإن كان للأفلاطونية الجديدة دور كبير في بناء ذلك النظام.
